SDG 3: Ethiopia

Hello class,

The sustainable development goal I continue to focus on is making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. As cities grow across our globe so does the need for adequate and accessible urban development projects that improve the quality of life for living in cities or rural communities. Like implementing public transportation, improving energy consumption measures, and providing water supply. In our global effort to improve cities, members of the United Nation banded together to establish goals and objectives to lead us to a promising future.

I chose to focus on Ethiopia this week. Among other countries in Africa, Ethiopia is projected to have a promising rate of urbanisation in the upcoming years. In reference to the Ethiopia Urbanization Review, the rate of urbanization is coupled with the promise of more than a quarter of its total population living in these urban areas (Alemayehu, 2019, para. 1). I can infer that this a priority within this country due to the potential of urbanized jobs becoming more of a demand, as cities develop more employment opportunities are available. Positively impacting their future economy, with such said I believe economical growth is a great marker that can be used to monitor the state of this SDG. As Ethiopia continues to urbanize this process could greatly determine economic growth, improve quality of life, and reduce poverty (Alemayehu, 2019, para. 3).

Ethiopia's efforts in urbanization parallel with their environmental initiatives. We see this with their National Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) Compost project (2017-2022), which is a partnership aimed to create cities that are integrated with green initiatives. Greening cities if you would look at it like such (UNDP, para. 5). With monitored intervention, cities within Ethiopia feature green urban infrastructure that details improved population capacity measures, proper waste management, and the planting of more trees. We can expect that this strengthened infrastructure invested in frameworks that were designed to withstand environmental threats such as flash floods.

With Ethiopia still considered as under urbanized, I believe that the implementation of this SDG and others will positively impact their nation as a whole.
